Not by itself. In a USDA study, E. coli on contaminated radish seed grew in both peat and hydroponic trays. It reached higher levels on the hydroponic plants. Clean seed matters more than the growing system.
Do you need to soak microgreen seeds?
For most crops, no. Radish trials found soaking small seeds didn’t change emergence or yield, and soaking sunflower and pea is optional. Beet seed sprouted faster after a soak, with no harm.
Are borage microgreens safe to eat?
Probably not. A 2024 study found natural plant toxins in borage microgreens at about 130 times the EU limit for borage leaves. The authors said they may not be fit to eat.
