AeroFarms Sold to a Palm Ventures Affiliate, Setting Up a Bigger Push for U.S. Microgreens

The biggest microgreens business story of the year landed this week. AeroFarms, the Danville, Virginia indoor vertical farming company and the leading U.S. supplier of fresh microgreens, announced on June 11 that it has been acquired by an affiliate of Palm Ventures. The company framed the deal as a move toward “mission-aligned ownership” meant to widen access to sustainably grown microgreens across the country.

Specific terms were not disclosed. What the company did share is the direction: new leadership, expanded distribution, and a longer runway to grow the brand’s microgreens portfolio. For a business that has been through a very public financial roller coaster over the past few years, a fresh owner with patient capital is a meaningful reset.

There’s also a leadership change tied to the transition. Gustavo Burger, who has steered the company through its recent chapter, is part of the handoff as the new ownership group steps in. Coverage from Produce Grower noted that the plan centers on broader retail reach rather than a pullback, which matters for growers watching whether big indoor farms expand or retreat.

Why should a small or mid-size grower care about a corporate acquisition? Because AeroFarms sets the pace at the top of the U.S. market. When the largest supplier consolidates and pushes for more shelf space, it shapes pricing, buyer expectations, and how “fresh microgreens” get marketed to mainstream shoppers. That ripples down to regional growers competing for the same customers.

The acquisition was carried widely, from PRNewswire and The Malaysian Reserve to Fruitnet and The Plant Base, a sign of how much attention indoor farming still draws even after the sector’s funding hangover. We’ll be watching what the new owners actually do with distribution over the next two quarters, and whether “expanded access” turns into real movement at the produce aisle.
